As Malayalam is an inflectionally rich language and most of the grammatical functions are realized by inflection, morphological parsing is taken as part of the shallow parsing. A typical shallow parsing includes three processes: Parts of Speech (POS) Tagging, Chunking and establishing relationship between chunks. The major aim of the research work is to prepare a shallow parser for Malayalam to enable machine translation, especially between Malayalam and Tamil.
